Before it was a hotel, Marea Viva was the home of a family of Luanco sailors. Within these walls, our great-grandfather hung the fishing gear out to dry and our great-grandmother lit a candle to the Virgen del Carmen every time the Cantabrian Sea turned rough and the men were late coming home.
From those old flats —beams cured by the salt, the isla del Carmen framed in the window— we were born. When the village began to fall quiet in winter, we wouldn't sell them: we fixed them up with our own hands and turned them into apartments, so that whoever came from far away would sleep to the murmur of the harbour, just as we did as children.
Then we took the biggest step of all: opening a small hotel, without losing the soul of a home. And every July we still walk down to the harbour to watch the Virgen del Carmen carried out to sea among decorated boats, as Luanco's sailors have always done. That is Marea Viva: a family of the sea that grew without ever taking its eyes off the water. Welcome. Treat it as your own.
